Ever write down a phone number only later to discover intelligible bits of paper in your freshly washed pants? A PDA or personal digital assistant is a mini organizational computer and a smart choice for today's on the go busy life style. The average PDA is an address book, a calendar, a list maker and a note taker. However, many PDAs do so much more--there are even PDA Phones! When choosing the PDA right for you, there are a variety of brands to choose from such as Palm PDAs, Visor PDAs, Psion PDAs, and RIM PDAs.
PDAs have been around for approximately 15 years, but only recently become very versatile; capable of handling wireless e-mail, digital photography and even music. Basic functions that all PDAs have in common are: data input through LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) screens which respond both to a stylus and a finger, basic organizational software, infrared port to beam info to other PDAs and a synchronization system involving a cradle, which allows a connection between a PDA and a desktop computer. More expensive models of PDAs have multiple expansion slots (for external memory storage, cameras, software), faster processors and built-in wireless modem networks.
There are two major OS (operating systems) for PDAs: Palm OS and PocketPC OS. How you plan to use your PDA can best determine which operating system is best for you. Palm makes Palm OS a simple application system. Pocket PC OS is made by Microsoft and is like a mini version of Windows. Both PDA OS are also licensed and used in PDAs made by a number of other companies. A third operating system would be a communications based PDA with e-mail and paging features such as the Blackberry PDA made by RIM.
Palm OS-based PDAs dominate the market and tend to be lower priced and smaller, with easy to use interfaces. However, PDAs with Palm OS cannot multitask: they can open only one application at a time. PDAs with Palm OS synchronizes appointments and contacts only with their own software, the Palm Desktop. (However, some Palm OS vendors do bundle an Outlook filter for syncing with Outlook.) If you wish to create and edit MS Office-compatible documents on a Palm OS PDA, you will need to buy other PDA Software. PDAs with Pocket PC OS can run numerous applications simultaneously--though only one application can appear on screen at a time. The PocketPC OS offers mini MS Office applications such as Outlook and Excel. When you synchronize your PocketPC OS PDA with your desktop computer, documents in MS Office applications are updated accordingly. As a result, PocketPC OS PDAs are slightly larger and generally more expensive than Palm OS based PDAs. Overall whichever amenities you need and prefer in your PDA will determine which OS is just right for you.
