PDA FAQ1. Why should I consider buying a PDA? A PDA is like having an extra brain, which remembers many things such as phone numbers, important meetings, and chore lists so you don't have too. A PDA can go a long way in organizing a busy life and is a great time manager, leaving more free time for the things you want to do. 2. I already have a laptop, why should I consider buying a PDA? It's true, a laptop and PDA can do many of the same things. However, a laptop can be bulky to carry around. A PDA is quick and tiny. It's super easy to whip out your PDA to consult your grocery list or to look up and call colleague's phone number. It's a little harder to haul a laptop around a grocery store. 3. Help! I want to buy a PDA! Where do I begin? First take a deep breath. Then consider what your PDA will be primarily used for. The 6 main things to think of when buying a PDA are memory, software, size/weight, battery life, screen quality and extra features (modems, camera, phone, etc..) 4. What's a basic, cheap PDA? Zire Handheld by Palm is a great basic organizer. It runs Palm OS 5.2.1, has a monochrome screen and 16 mb of internal memory. 5. What's an advanced PDA? Any of the BlackBerry 7200 Series by RIM. The Blackberry 7200 series have high resolution color screens (240x160) and run phone, email, browser and organizer applications. 6. Which is a better OS, Palm or Pocket PC? It depends on what you need your PDA to be capable of. In general, Palm is thought of as an easier system to use, but more simplistic in its capabilities. However, added software, while sometimes expensive can make a Palm OS PDA do many PocketPC OS like tricks. A Pocket PC OS based PDA can be slightly harder to use, but can execute more complex functions. 7. These days technology is becoming obsolete quickly--how can I insure my PDA will be usable 3 years from now? Unfortunately, there is no way to know when your PDA will be considered an obsolete model. However many of the name brand PDA companies offer upgrades and new software that will work on older PDAs--even when that particular PDA model is no longer being manufactured. Also, a variety of third party companies continue to make software and other accessories for individual early model PDAs. A good rule of thumb in choosing your PDA would be to choose a model that fits your current lifestyle, not a PDA model that has many expensive features that you may use 'someday'. 7. What does PDA, LCD, etc.. stand for? PDA - Personal Digital Assistant, a handheld or palm size computer. GPS - Global Positioning System, a system of 24 satellites for identifying current location within a few meters. IF - Infrared LCD - Liquid Crystal Display found on cellular phones and PDA's OS - Operating System, the system that gives instructions to the computer device. Palm PDA OS - A Palm (relatively simple and easy to use) based PDA OS. PocketPC PDA OS - A Windows based PDA OS. MB - Megs or measurement of memory storage. WMP - Windows Media Player, a Multi Media program, which plays MP3's. Wireless Modem - A modem and antenna that transmits and receives over the air and comes in several varieties. PDAsEver write down a phone number only later to discover intelligible bits of paper in your freshly washed pants? A PDA or personal digital assistant is a mini organizational computer and a smart choice for today's on the go busy life style. The average PDA is an address book, a calendar, a list maker and a note taker. However, many PDAs do so much more--there are even PDA Phones! When choosing the PDA right for you, there are a variety of brands to choose from such as Palm PDAs, Visor PDAs, Psion PDAs, and RIM PDAs. |
